Evanston Birding: Is this bird a hawk?
Today on my way to Jewel, I spotted two large birds building a nest. Below are three images; the tree where they're building, the nest (see the tail feathers on the left?) and a close up of one of the two birds. Are these hawks, falcons?
I'm almost certain that it's a red-tailed hawk, but I will ask my friend and former newspaper colleague, birding expert Sheryl Devore, to have a look. Welcome to Evanston.
Sheryl responded: "Hi Gary -- This is a Cooper's Hawk -- looks like they built a nest there. It's the right timing for them. You can tell by the head shape, for starters."
