Share Your Table for Thanksgiving 2015 

The International Office (IO) at Northwestern University is proud to announce our Seventh Annual "Share Your Table for Thankgiving" Program! In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, the IO seeks community members in the Evanston/Chicago areas to host international students, faculty, staff and their families for Thanksgiving dinner (November 26, 2015). 

Complete the form below so we can learn more about you and your family. We ask that you kindly sign up only if you are absolutely certain you are available to host.   

Participate in cultural exchange, make new friends, and introduce NU's international community to the great American holiday of Thanksgiving! 

Due to the popularity of this program, we cannot guarantee any specific matches between hosts and our international community.  

After signing up, Stephanie Cisneros will be providing continuous updates, and reminders. Information about specific host family and international pairings will be sent out approximately 1-2 weeks before Thanksgiving.

Lunch on the lake summer concerts at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. --- An outdoor summer concert series that begins with fiery Spanish guitars and ends with the sultry sounds of a rhythm and blues vocalist -- along with a picturesque view of the lakefront -- will soon be luring hungry music fans to “Lunch on the Lake” on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus.

Free and open to the public, the six-week Wednesday noontime series also will feature top calypso, country, jazz, rock and pop guest artists.

Presented by Northwestern’s School of Continuing Studies’ Summer Session, Norris University Center and the Center for Student Involvement, the noontime concerts will take place from June 25 through July 30, on the South Lawn of Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors and held on the ground floor of Norris Center.

The annual concert series is popular with Northwestern faculty, staff and students as well as Evanston and North Shore residents.

Audience members will have the option to purchase a barbecued lunch prepared outdoors by executive-level chefs from Northwestern Dining, the University’s food service provider, or they can bring their own lunch. Picnic table seating and free picnic pads are available.
The “Lunch on the Lake” outdoor menu, which will change weekly, will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. throughout the six-week summer outdoor concert season. The $7.50 full menu includes a choice of a grilled entree, two side portions and dessert, plus an additional $1 to $1.69 for a beverage. Other menu options also will be available. 2014 “Lunch on the Lake” concert dates and performers

• June 25 – Guitarra Azul, a Latin percussion and Spanish guitar ensemble, perform rumba, flamenco, Latin jazz and world music. 
• July 2 – The Steel Drum Guy performs Caribbean calypso and Latin style music on steel drums accompanied by an instrumental background track.
• July 9 – David and Whitney are a husband-and-wife country rock and pop duo from southern Indiana. 
• July 16 – The Acoustic Generation, a Chicago guitar and vocal duo, perform rock, pop and country music.
• July 23 – Chris Greene, who was born and raised in Evanston, is a Chicago jazz saxophonist.  
• July 30 – Kia Harper is a Chicago rhythm and blues singer and songwriter.

CONSTRUCTION ALERT: Free parking after 4 p.m. will remain uninterrupted throughout summer construction in the vicinity of Norris Center. Handicapped and special access parking may be impacted. Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey is a comprehensive and innovative exhibition of works by the international artist Wangechi Mutu—her first survey in the United States.

Spanning the mid-1990s to the present, the exhibition unites more than 50 pieces, from the artist’s most iconic collages to rarely seen early works and new creations.

Highlights of the exhibition include Mutu’s first animated video, created in collaboration with musician Santigold. The artist will also transform one of the Block’s galleries into an environmental installation, including a monumental wall drawing, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in her work.

Born in Nairobi, Kenya and living in New York since the early 1990s, Mutu is best known for large-scale collages depicting female figures in lush, otherworldly landscapes. Her work explores issues of gender, race, war, globalization, colonialism and the eroticization of the black female body. She often combines found materials and magazine cutouts with sculpture and painted imagery, sampling from sources as diverse as African traditions, international politics, the fashion industry, and science fiction.

All week, Rotelli has been projecting light against the facade of Deering Library from 5 to 9 p.m. in a show named after a Dylan Thomas quote, “Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Light.” Lights are up until tonight.

Do Good: Youth Philanthropy Program at Center for Civic Engagement, Northwestern University

At the core of Allowance for Good is the Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy program. Youth who participate in this student seminar series are introduced to themes in global development, philanthropy, and civic action. The program culminates with a Certificate in Global Philanthropic Leadership and equips students with the skills to lead change-based projects in their communities.

We work side-by-side with and empower youth leaders to develop and execute a self-contained or small group project that synthesizes personal interests with concepts of philanthropy and global development. Youth leaders mobilize projects in their communities to raise awareness for, give their time to, and invite contributions for their AfG Global Affiliate of choice. Youth efforts contribute to one or more of five key project areas: Access to Water, Health & Hygiene, Classroom Materials, Bricks & Mortar, and Funds for Fun. Join us this spring to expand your knowledge about global philanthropic leadership. Youth ages 13-18 welcome!

Chicago Magazine Lists 15 Great Things to do in Evanston

What perfect timing for Evanston to make Chicago Magazine's latest issue with a list of 15 Great Things to do in Evanston! I've got a gaggle of visitors coming this summer and now all I have to do is send them this link and their entire trip is planned, lazy days of summer indeed.

This list is also a fantastic resource for me as I have never been to the Shakespeare Garden and it's on my list along with Bat Bar - which I just heard of the other day at a porch party (more on that later)!

Also mentioned was the Fountain Square Arts Festival, featuring 200 artists, on July 6 and 7 at the corner of Sherman Avenue and Church Street. This FREE festival is a great event over the 4th of July holiday weekend. See you there!

Rick Bayless wants you to eat lunch at Frontera Fresco in Evanston, today!

Are you sitting around wondering what to have for lunch today? Think no more and walk on over to Rick Bayless' Frontera Fresco in the Norris Center on the Northwestern Campus. Eat delicious and healthy Mexican food while looking out at Lake Michigan! No reservation necessary and no food snobs, just coeds!

For those of you who missed this memo, Frontera Fresco opened this winter and Northwestern students and staff are loving it, but they are not loving the long lines - at least that's what the blogs say, but who reads blogs anyway...Get in line early, lunch hours are noon to 10 p.m. but not all items are available after 7 p.m. Click here for a full schedule to include breakfast and dinner.

Expect to spend about $10 on lunch and to eat very well. We bought tamales, chips-n-salsa, guacamole and aqua fresca and were all very satisfied (3 of us)! Most of the items on the menu are gluten free, see a partial list here;

Fresco Tacos (made with 100 percent corn tortillas, Chihuahua cheese and a variety of gluten-free filling ingredients such as shrimp, chicken, roasted vegetables and steak)

Thank you for reading my blog Evanston Newbie, a blog devoted to covering my family's move from El Paso, TX, to Evanston, IL, in 2011. We arrived in June 2011 and several people have pointed out that I am no longer a "newbie" and should start some other blog. 1.28.13: Harry Belafonte to keynote Dr. King program at NU

World-renowned actor, singer, civil rights activist and humanitarian Harry Belafonte will deliver the keynote address commemorating Martin Luther King Jr., at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.

The program will conclude Northwestern’s two-week celebration that includes discussions, lectures, film screenings, music, theater and service projects to inspire reflection on Dr. King’s life and legacy.

Belafonte, the "King of Calypso," who made the songs“Jamaica Farewell” and “Banana Boat (Day-O)” hits on the Billboard charts, met a young Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in New York in the 1950s. They developed a long friendship that transformed Belafonte’s life.

Tonight you can hear Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel talk politics for free at Northwestern's Technological Institute. There are no tickets for this event. The doors open at 4 p.m. and there is open seating.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will provide his perspective on the 2012 Election. Mayor Emanuel, a Northwestern alumnus, previously served as the White House Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2003 – 2009. He also served as a senior advisor to President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1998. Chicago Politics and the 2012 Election
